Press Conference to be Held by Ministers Conference of Winston-Salem & Vicinity PDF Print E-mail
January 9, 2012

The Ministers Conference of Winston-Salem & Vicinity will hold a press conference on Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at 2:00 pm at Grace Presbyterian Church located at 3901 Carver School Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27105 (corner of Carver School Road and Butterfield). Members of the Conference will meet publicly and read a letter hand-delivered to the District Attorney, Jim O’Neill, Esq. on December 15, 2011.

This letter expresses our grave concerns over his signing of the November 14th Conference of District Attorneys’ letter to Senator Phil Berger regarding the repeal of the Racial Justice Act (RJA). We found the letter to be inflammatory, disturbing, and extreme. We are deeply saddened by the DA’s actions because we had hoped our leading legal officer would be bending over backwards to ensure racial bias would not factor into any cases, especially capital ones.

In the letter, we had asked that Mr. O’Neill respond within ten days of its receipt. We further asked that he disavow the deception of the November 14th letter and withdraw his signature. Finally, we asked that he submit a public apology for his initial support of it. We have yet to receive a response.

Several members of the Ministers Conference of Winston-Salem & Vicinity will expound on the main points of contention outlined in the letter and provide additional information on our public support of the RJA, which recently survived yet another ill-motivated attempt at repeal.
