Transylvania County Library to host Chapman and other death penalty reform advocates

The Asheville Citizen Times

Glen Edward Chapman, who was released from North Carolina's death row last year after spending more than 15 years behind bars for two murders he did not commit, will appear in Brevard today for a meeting at the Transylvania County Library of the North Carolina Coalition for a Moratorium. He will be available for an interview in front of the library in Brevard at 5:15 p.m. today.

Chapman was released last year after a judge found that police lied at his trial and withheld evidence pointing to his innocence. Judge Robert Ervin of Hickory also found that Chapman's attorney failed to investigate his case and that one of the deceased women was probably not a murder victim at all.

After his release, Chapman moved to Asheville, where he has been employed at the Renaissance Hotel for a year and a half. He has made a home and many friends in Asheville. He traveled to Raleigh last month to lobby state senators for passage of the NC Racial Justice Act.

The controversial NC Racial Justice was passed and signed into law by Gov. Perdue last month. Attached is Chapman's statement about the Bill as well as the impact of racial discrimination on his case.
