Before the NC Senate vote on H 744 on July 27, 2015 PFADP Executive Director Steve Dear spoke at the Moral Monday rally outside the Governor’s Office at the NC Capitol. Here is an excerpt from his speech:

Tonight the NC Senate is intent on voting to bring North Carolina backwards. The Senate is scheduled to vote on House Bill 774, a bill whose sponsors claim will restart executions.

The bill removes safeguards around executions, removes requirements for public rule-making processes, allows for the state to withhold basic information about execution drugs and protocols, where they were obtained and who is involved. It no longer requires doctors to be present, and makes it more likely that executions will be botched and torturous as has happened in other states.

No doctors, no public information at executions. What could go wrong?
