November 30, 2011 On Monday night the NC Senate repealed the Racial Justice Act and sent Senate Bill 9 to Gov. Bev Perdue. The vote was 27-17. This is far from over. That’s where you come in—again. We expect Gov. Perdue to veto the bill. Please click here to send a message to the governor encouraging her to veto S9. Please additionally send a message to your state senator about his or her vote on Monday night. They need to hear from you. Senators in support of the RJA spoke eloquently on the Senate floor Monday night about the need to preserve this law. At a public hearing in the Senate Judiciary I Committee Pastor Alan Felton of Salem United Methodist Church in Oxford and the Rev. Dr. William Barber of Greenleaf Christian Church in Goldsboro and president of the NC NAACP spoke passionately and brilliantly about the need for the Racial Justice Act. They were joined by former PFADP vice-president Tom Fewel, whose daughter was murdered, and other eloquent supporters of the RJA. In recent days hundreds of PFADP members across North Carolina contacted their legislators and prosecutors to keep the RJA. Please click here to help PFADP keep this campaign strong. Every step of the way, legislative leaders opposed to the Racial Justice Act seemed to do their best to circumvent full consideration and debate by legislators and the public. The NC Conference of District Attorneys circulated a letter to legislators full of misrepresentations of fact and distortions about the RJA. Some senators such as Senate President Pro Tem Phil Berger repeated those distortions on the Senate floor Monday night. Let’s stay strong for justice. Keep the Racial Justice Act.
