June 5, 2012 People of Faith Against the Death Penalty encourages all people of faith living in Montana to endorse one of the following letters to Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer appealing for clemency for Ronald Smith. Mr. Smith is a Canadian man who has been on death row in Montana for nearly 30 years for his role in the murders of Harvey Madman, Jr. and Thomas Running Rabbit, Jr. If you live in Montana and identify as a religious leader, please click here, http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/1576/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=10717. If you live in Montana and identify as a lay person of faith, please click here, http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/1576/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=10719. The Montana Board of Pardons and Parole recently denied Mr. Smith's request for clemency even though he clearly demonstrated at his parole hearing in early May 2012 a great deal of transformation and remorse, sincerely apologizing to the family members of Harvey Madman, Jr. and Thomas Running Rabbit, Jr. Gov. Schweitzer is not bound by the parole board's recommendation and has the authority to grant clemency to Mr. Smith. We urge you to invite all of the people of faith you know in Montana to endorse one of these letters immediately. Thank you.
