Urgent Action: Racial Justice Act Today PDF Print E-mail

The NC Racial Justice Act is again under threat of being repealed today. Unable to muster the votes in the NC House to successfully override Gov. Perdue's veto of last year's repeal attempt, the conservative leadership has created a new repeal bill. The bill is being touted as an amendment to the Racial Justice Act but would, in fact, repeal this vital and historic law.

We also urge you to call the following four representatives, who need to be reassured that the Racial Justice Act needs to be preserved. Tell them to oppose Senate Bill 416.

This repeal attempt comes on the heels of Superior Court Judge Gregory Weeks' ruling that death row prisoner Marcus Robinson succeeded in showing that racial bias had influenced his death sentence. Judge Weeks' decision amounts to an admission that the legacies of Jim Crow, of lynchings, and of slavery have persisted and must be dealt with honestly. This decision will ultimately have effects in our courts far beyond capital cases.
